At Day One Society, Board members bring different experiences and perspectives to the work, all grounded in a shared commitment to care, dignity, and service.

Arjun Singh has a strong connection to Kamloops and extensive experience in public service. Born and raised in the city, he learned the importance of giving back from his parents at a young age. Over the years, that commitment has shaped many parts of his life, from serving 14 years on Kamloops City Council to his role as President of the Union of BC Municipalities in 2018/19. Today, he continues to stay involved locally as a Rotarian and is an active member of the local running community, a property manager in his family’s apartment business, and through his consulting company, Better Citizen Consulting.
Arjun became a member of the Day One Society Board of Directors in 2023. “I was honoured and humbled to be asked by Marilyn McLean to join the Day One Society Board in 2023,” says Arjun Singh, Board Member, Day One Society. “The services Day One provides are just so critical to the community. I also felt I could bring some experience as a past city councillor.”
For Arjun, being part of the Board was a way to contribute to an organization doing work he sees as important to Kamloops. He believes people looking for help with substance use deserve support that meets them where they are, while also recognizing that recovery looks different for different people. “It is important that people who are looking for help with problematic substance use have the best services possible to assist them in getting better,” he explains. “Recovery looks different for different people.”
Arjun believes continued access to detox and substance use services is important as people and communities navigate increasingly complex challenges. “With the toxic drug crisis and the emergence of fentanyl, the situation isn’t getting any easier from a broad perspective,” he says. “We certainly need strong detox and substance use services to assist people, and we need more of them.”
Arjun’s approach to service is grounded in the belief that community contribution does not always have to happen in large or highly visible ways. “I think it’s important for everybody to try to give back to their community,” he shares. “It doesn’t have to be in massive ways. It can be in very small ways. Every little bit helps.”
In his role with Day One Society, Arjun sees value in bringing a practical, community-minded perspective to the Board. “For me, in my role on the Board of Day One Society, this means bringing a layperson’s perspective, some experience working with government, and a desire to work with people who are marginalized in society,” he shares.
Arjun also carries a strong sense of gratitude into the role. “I have been so fortunate in my life, and I feel an obligation to spread good fortune as much as I possibly can,” he adds.
At Day One Society, Arjun’s role reflects his steady belief in service, shared responsibility, and the importance of supporting people who are seeking help.
