Behind every strong organization are leaders who believe deeply in the work being done and the community it serves. At Day One Society, that leadership includes Board President Marilyn McLean.

A retired Assistant Superintendent from School District #73 (Kamloops/Thompson), Marilyn brings more than 35 years of experience in education to her role. Throughout her career, she worked closely with students, families, and educators across the region, developing a deep understanding of how communities influence resilience, well-being, and opportunity. That perspective continues to shape how she views the role of community support in recovery.
“Communities play an instrumental role in supporting resilience and recovery,” Marilyn shares. “Caring communities provide safety and connections for both youth and adults. When people feel supported and treated with respect, it becomes much easier to face the unknown or take that first step toward healing.”
She believes that when communities support vulnerable individuals without judgment, the benefits extend far beyond the individual. Meeting basic needs with dignity helps create stronger, safer communities for everyone. “Being able to move forward is much easier when someone knows there are people who believe in them,” she says. “A community that says, ‘We will believe in you even if you do not yet believe in yourself,’ is a community that helps people succeed.”
As Board President, Marilyn approaches leadership with curiosity and a strong belief that every voice matters. She encourages open dialogue among Board members so that decisions are informed by thoughtful discussion and shared understanding. “I approach leadership with the perspective that every voice matters,” she explains. “I’m interested in hearing what people think and why. It’s important that Board members feel comfortable sharing their views so decisions are made after thorough discussion.”
Her leadership is grounded in Day One Society's core values: acceptance, kindness, commitment, integrity, and creativity. She also values the dedication and time that Board members contribute to the organization’s work.
Marilyn believes organizations like Day One Society play a critical role in helping communities better understand substance use disorder and recovery. Through partnerships, education, and outreach, the organization continues to shift the conversation toward compassion and evidence-informed understanding. “The work being done to help people see substance use disorder as a disease rather than a personal failing is incredibly important,” she says. “That shift helps reduce stigma and build greater awareness in the community.”
Programs such as the Out of the Ashes bursary also play an important role by celebrating resilience and highlighting the successes of individuals rebuilding their lives through education and recovery.
Looking ahead, Marilyn is hopeful that collaboration among community agencies will continue to strengthen recovery services across Kamloops. She sees growing partnerships and new initiatives as encouraging signs that support systems are expanding. “I am hopeful that organizations will continue building partnerships so people seeking help can access services more easily,” she says. “And I am hopeful that the people of Kamloops will continue supporting the important work being done to ensure services remain available for those who need them most.”
For Marilyn, serving on the Day One Society Board reflects the same commitment that guided her career in education, helping people build resilience, find support, and move forward with hope. Day One Society is grateful for Marilyn McLean’s thoughtful leadership and her continued dedication to strengthening both the organization and the community it serves.
